Epoxy Garage Floor Coatings

Epoxy has been used in flooring applications for over 50 years because of its good chemical resistance, hardness/abrasion resistance, and moderate to low cost. The chemical resistance and adhesive strength that Epoxy resins exhibit make for an extremely versatile and useful coating. Epoxy has many uses, whether that is for decoration or corrosion protection, the application process is quite simple. Most applicators prefer to use a squeegee or a rake to spread out the epoxy on the surface of a floor, because high solids epoxy coatings are often rather viscous (or thick, think of honey or maple syrup). Other applicators will roll the epoxy resin onto the substrate or floor after having cut or thinned the epoxy with solvent.  Our epoxy is formulated with raw ingredients from some of the world’s largest and oldest chemical houses.

The adhesive strength of epoxy makes it suitable for many flooring applications and ensures the longevity of the floor. Epoxy has been one of the most used coating for concrete floors for over the last 50 years. The ratio of hardness, elasticity, and chemical resistance is superior for its moderate to low cost. The reason epoxy is still widely used on many applications is because it’s relatively easy to use, and the performance speaks for itself.

However, there are some disadvantages of using epoxy.

Preparation and application is a tedious process that must be done correctly. If not done properly, the epoxy coating’s lifetime will be shortened. When preparing a floor, cracks will need to be filled as well as any solvents on the floor should be cleaned before applying epoxy. Although preparing a floor isn’t extremely difficult, it can be very time consuming and may require a lot of effort which is a drawback. Separate from preparation, applying epoxy is a time consuming process because it takes several days to dry and requires multiple coats.

Epoxy should only be applied during certain times of the year when the humidity levels are low enough where it won’t affect the durability of the coating. If applied in moist environments, the epoxy coating might show signs of peeling. In addition, if any moisture gets trapped underneath the surface of the epoxy floor coating, this may lead to further problems once the moisture evaporates, which may led to bubbling or warping.

There are many advantages and disadvantages of using epoxy for garage flooring, however it is also very important to consult with a professional to help finalize any decision on what type of floor coating to use and to answer any questions.
